Smoking = wasting money?
Do you agree if someone say smoking is a sort of wasting money?
Well, some people would agree and of course some people would not. Whichever part you belong to I’m sure you have a good and reasonable argumentation regarding your answer. I, myself, belong to the part that’s agreed with the statement. Let me show you why I think smoking is such a wasting money.
First, I make a brief calculation to estimate how much money does someone spent to smoke within a month. In my country, one piece of cigarette cost you around Rp 500,-. If we convert it to US dollar it’s around $ 0.05. If you smoke one cigarette daily, then in a week you will spend:
7 x $ 0.05 = $ 0.35
And within a month it will be;
4 x $ 0.35 = $ 1.4
Well, I don’t think there would be many people who will consider $ 1.4 for a month is expensive. But it’s a fact that a smoker is almost impossible to smoke only one cigarette in a day. Average smoker smoke at least half pack of cigarette a day, some are even much more. In my country, a pack of cigarette usually contains 12 piece of it. So a half pack would be six pieces of cigarette. Then the actual spending of a smoker is approximately
6 x $ 1.4 = $ 8.4
So a smoker would spend $ 8.4 a month at the very least just to buy cigarette. And for you, what is the meaning of $ 8.4?
Now I want you to look at these pictures.

Do you think $ 8.4 also “no big deal” to them? I don’t think so. For them $ 8.4 could mean a better food, a proper dresses, a more comfortable place to live in, or a warmer place to sleep at night. For you $ 8.4 might only mean a crap, but for them it surely means life. You will never imagine how much difference $ 8.4 could bring to them.
What we do all these days when we are smoking is actually burning out all of that money. We change them with ashes and smoke. We change the $ 8.4 for some possibility of getting cancer or pulmonary disease. So instead of giving better life those money brought nothing but a brief pleasure and a last long suffering, not only for you but also your surroundings.
SO, DOES SMOKING REALLY MEAN WASTING YOUR MONEY?

so true mate, so true. i wish more people would treat the 8.4 dollars the same way you do. anyways, smoking is as dangerous and stupid like marijuana but the only reason why smoking is legal is because there’s a bigger industry who sells cigarettes but i treat them as stupid as i treat marijuana.

Interesting! You have actually calculated the savings one can make if they stop smoking. You can also probably add the cost of medical care that one needs as a result of smoking.
You are right to most people $8 a month is a substantial amount and can be spend on other things like food, education or even entertainment.

$8.4 can be a lot of money depending on your perspective as the pictures illustrate. But then you could view everything in that light in societies driven by consumerism - shopping sprees, guzzling alcohol at bars, and the list goes on.

Goodness, yes it is a waste of money. Not just the money you spend on the cigarettes themselves, but all of the products you have to use to whiten your teeth, freshen your breath, cover the smell on your clothes/car/home, and possible future medical bills from the destruction you are causing your body.
